My Story

Nina Hasen has been fighting for equity and justice for over 30 years through work in the non-profit, private and government sectors. For the last 14 years, she has led global efforts to address the HIV epidemic with a focus on the Global South. A PhD-trained scientist with over 20 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Hasen blends experience in community-based social justice movements with rigorous research approaches to solve persistent problems in health systems. Through work with the US government as well as non-governmental organizations, foundations and academic research institutions, she has supported and led HIV prevention and treatment programs in over a dozen countries. Key projects include the development of HIV Prevention Guidance for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), establishing the content and evaluation metrics for the $2 billion PEPFAR “Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe” or DREAMS partnership, and guiding the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Mpilo Project in transforming support for men living with HIV in South Africa. Her most recent focus has been advancing efforts to inform all people living with HIV that HIV treatment prevents transmission and can allow for a safe and healthy sex-life.  As a thought leader in global health, Dr. Hasen has contributed to strategy development within the World Health Organization; the U.S. Department of State; the US Agency for International Development; the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation as well as the governments of Ethiopia, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Women’s Studies from Oberlin College, and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin.
